HELLENIC BLACK METAL
Sunny Greece is not really a typical country when you think about Black Metal. Too little snow, no burning churches, no murder, not very Viking.... WRONG! Several young bands emerged in the early1990's and showed the metal world another face of evil and extreme music.
The bands that made the typical Greek sound were mainly Black Metal bands. But they did not sound exactly like the Norwegian bands, like Mayhem, Darkthrone, Immortal, Emperor, etc., which began to make music in the same period of time (late 80´s, early 90´s) and so they could not be a direct inspiration for Hellenic bands. Of course both scenes had a close relationship through tape trading and letter writing, the differences were mererely of musical nature, the black ideology was the same! The main aspect of the first Greek Black Metal bands was the riffing and not the speed. Strong Heavy Metal riffs were combined with a dark voice, anti-religious lyrics and the use of keyboards, to create a dark and mystical atmosphere. Here are the best examples of Hellenic Black Metal. There are much more releases on our site, but these bands here were the spearhead of a scene, that was (and partially still is) unique amongst other extreme metal scenes!
